Default Simrad handheld VHF?

http://www.simrad-yachting.com/Produ...pecifications/

I was getting ready to buy a Standard Horizon HX851, then came across this Simrad which is actually cheaper than the 851.

Any opinions about it, especially in comparison to the HX851?

Default Handheld VHF comparison

Might as well make it a 3-way. http://www.icomamerica.com/en/produc...d/default.aspx

That Icom won't be available until it gets FCC type-accepted.

I'm leaning toward the Standard Horizon, and would even consider the discontinued HX850 if someone here has one and wants sell it to move up to the newer HX851. PM me if you have one to sell.

The Simrad seems to have had little exposure...like maybe they have sold only a handful of them perhaps?

I'm still using an HX150S. You can have it once the FCC does its thing and I get my ICOM.

I took a quick look at the specs vs the HX-851 which I own. It's the first other handheld I've seen that has its own GPS receiver. It seems to have a little of the functionality of the GX-2150 fixed unit VHF, but remember that trying to track target and set waypoints on a display the size of an iPod screen is challenging at best.

The MOB and "come get me" stuff is essentially what you get with DSC radio, so they may have made it easier than the HX-851's distress button, but I'd certainly want to see the manual.

It looks roughly equivalent to the HX-851. If it's cheaper, then give it a go.

Only spec I saw that is < the HX-851 is transmit power which is 6 watts on the HX-851 vs 5 watts on the Simrad.

It is not for sale per the Simrad link at the more conventional stores like West Marine. Maybe Jim at BOE Marine sells it...

Post a link to a manual if u can find it.

I just bought an HX- 851, and almost sent it back. I'm not sure if it's a water proofing issue, or just trying to get a ton of options in a small package... but these radios don't have knobs....which means that you have to hit the squelch button, then the up or down button or the vol. button then the up or down button to perform simple adjustments. What a pain in the ass ! When I saw this thread I was exited.....until I found the Simrad has the same knob less design. Is the Icom the same ? Just looked at the link... no knobs.

I don't mind knoblessness at all. It improves waterproof operation that's for sure. The squelch is something I set about once a month if I get an irritating channel.

Once the HX-851 is set up, my experience is the most frequently selected functions in "power on" and scan (either priority or DW) and then weather.

I also use the DSC Test each time before I go out.

Just a matter of getting used to the interface.

That Simrad radio looks promising.
