Default Lowrance HDS-7 and DSC VHF for buddy tracking ?

Hi Folks,

Have any of you set up a Lowrance HDS-7 and a DSC VHF, so you can see your buddies' boats on your HDS-7 chart? If so, then what VHF model?

Thanks!

Andrei

Lowrance's VHF will do this - I believe it interconnects with NMEA2K

I am pretty sure both boats have to have either Lowrance or Simrad VHF radios with

the "Track Your Buddy" feature in order for them to show up on the plotter screen.

I'm thinking that the Lowrance/Simrad "Track Your Buddy" is just thier marketing lingo for DSC Position Tracking. I've never tried it, but the SH Matrix+ radio that I have has this feature. Based on the manual (p.73-74), you can poll the position of up to 4 entries from your 'address book', and it will output the NMEA0183 DSC and DSE sentences to a connected chartplotter. Since these are standard sentences, any chartplotter that can read the DSC sentences should be able to display them (in exactly the same way the chartplotter would display the position of a DSC emergency call).

Does anyone know of a video or screenshot that shows what happens on a Lowrance HDS Gen 2 when it receives a DSC position?

The response of a HDS chart plotter when it receives a DSC call is shown in

Thanks, that's exactly what I was looking for. It looks like it creates a waypoint.

I don't care about AIS so that radio would be a poor choice for me. I have a GX1600 which has the features I need.

Where did you get the idea that I was responding to you?

It's a poor choice for the OP as well. He wants DSC and you're recommending an AIS receiver that cost almost 3x the one with the features he needs. Extremely poor choice. Not to mention that the OP moved on 2.5 years ago, so you're a little late to be responding to him.
