Default Which Handheld VHF?

Looking to purchase a handheld VHF to ad to my ditch bag and bring it with me on my Jet-ski when cruising in the summer. I have no experience with any of the handheld brands this will be my first. Looking for a quality unit that will give me several years of service.

Over the christmas holidays, I got the Standard Horizon HX851. See it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r6z2lNelRXo

It has a built in GPS with distress DSC calling, is waterproof and powerful. KillerGriller I think had it on here for sale at $200 but he ran out of them. I had WM match a great price online and got it there.

I'd recommend one of the mid size ICom units. The one I bought in 2007 (used it on my jet boat as well as my PWC's) and it was still going strong 4 years later when I sold the boat.

FYI, I bought two of the Standard Horizon multiband compact handheld radios and the features are cool, but the range is very short. I wouldn't recommend it for a ditch bag radio.

I agree with RnR on the HX851 Can be bought here http://www.thegpsstore.com/Standard-...GPS-P2312.aspx for 200 bucks. All the newest features, S/H always been a great unit. Waterproof and floating with a strobe, if you are looking for a ditch bag unit - why would you want any unit without GPS and DSC - this has them BOTH your exact location is displayed, pretty darn important as a ditch bag unit I would think!! I bought this S/H last week after a lot of reserch. *BTW this S/H is a full 6 watt power unit to boot.

Standard Horizon HX-851. Don't delay...Just buy it! It's the best on the market right now. $200.00 is short money when I purchased my SH HX-470S for @ least $350.00 7 years ago & it blows mine away! My last fixed-mount VHF was an I-COM (good stuff) But....They do not have an answer for the new GPS fixed GX1700 or the portables to date.

I like the Standard Horizon HX models. I am leaning towards the HX751, how accurate/ease of use is the GPS on the HX851???

The SH HX851 is the only way to go from a safety perspective. Forget about waypoints and navigation - that's for a chartplotter or handheld GPS. The GPS and DSC function on the HX851 mean that if you're in trouble, your digital DSC distress call, along with your GPS coordinates, are picked up by all DSC VHF radios within range. That alone makes it the only sensible choice for a handheld, for ditch bag or otherwise.
