Default Lowrance HDS5, Navionics vs Nautic Insight

I want to get the HDS5 GPS/Fish Finder but don't know what pre-loaded package to get. I'm looking for some opinions on Navionics or Nautic Insight. Most of my fishing will be southern California coastal to offshore from Catalina as far south as Ensenada, MX.

Thanx in advance for any advice sent my way, Kevin.

Really depends on how good the mapping is in your specific area.....

One thing to consider on the HDS5 & 7 units - there is only one memory card slot - so if you use an external map card, then you can't have a card inserted for logging, or for reading in a StructureMap file, etc - if the two are close enough, then you may want to go with the Insight for that reason.....

Of course you have some internal storage where you can save screenshots or logs and then transfer to/from a memory card with the map card removed......

Can you transfer the external map card files to a larger card and then use logging or for reading in a StructureMap file, saving files?

Good question - my understanding is the cards are somehow copy-protected.... however, how much extra memory is on the Map card, as I believe you may be able to write to them..... I know the Lowrance InsightHD cards tout that (the add-on cards - not the internal Insight maps).....

Of course, going back and deleting files on a mapping card that I paid $100-$200 for would make me a bit nervous - I'd be sure to accidentally select the wrong file....
