Default Buying another HDS, Insight or not?

Presently I have an HDS 8 (non Insight) and an LCX 37C on my boat. I use the HDS as my GPS/Plotter with a Navionics Platinum card in it. I am going to get an HDS 8 Gen2 to replace the LCX 27C. Any good reasons I should get Insight in the new HDS? Thanks

What will you use the new HDS for - as a fish-finder to pair to the other unit you are using as a GPS/plotter? If you use the existing one for your charts right next to the new one, then not sure you care about what maps are in the new one...... you can always move the Navionics card between units if needed.

On the other side of the coin, it is potentially possible that the Insight may have better charts than the Navionics - might be interesting to compare your areas of interest to see...

Now - with the HDS5 & 7, I would get Insight - I was going to get the base until I realized that these only have one card slot (the 8 & 10 have 2). If I wanted to run StructureMap from a saved map then I would have to remove a mapping card and insert my memory card - and if I had base maps I'd be overlaying a pretty crappy map...... On the HDS8/10 you have 2 card slots so you can still put a chart card in one an the memory card in the other to load structure maps...

From the looks of it, it only cost about $100 bucks more for the built in maps so considering that I say WTH, go for it!

Seriously, if you boat in one spot and already have maps you are happy with then you can save a few dollars by buying without but I have the built in maps on my HDS-10 G2 and I am quite happy with them.

The bottom line is this - a Base unit costs about the same as an Insight unit once you buy the navionics chart. So the cost is close to the same either way. If you boat all around the coast, and hit some lakes and whatever else then you are covered no matter where you go with the Insight unit. If you stick to one area then the Navionics Platinum Plus charts are the best for that unit (talking about coast). The best for Lakes varies from one area to the next.

Thanks guys,
What the hell, it's only $100, I'll go with the Insight. Jim, you'll be getting an order from me in a month or so.
