Default Garmin GPSmap 540s and GXM 31 smart antenna

I'm thinking of purchasing the GXM 31 smart antenna so i can receive weather updates on the chartplotter via XM satellite service. Do I replace my current antenna or just add the GXM 31?

also...by installing the GXM 31, will the 540s automatically recognize it? Will it finally give me an option to choose the weather screen?

Thanks, I'll check ebay but that doesn't answer my question. Will the 540s recognize the new antenna and make the weather option available or will I need to do something else?

Garmin Marine customer support totally rocks. Send them an email now and it will probably be in your inbox when you get up in the morning.

The GXM 31 is a seperate antenna. I added it to my 545S and it also has XM radio outputs as well. Works great.

Sea-Major,
The GXM-31 is "plug & play" it hooks up into your 2nd plug input on the back of your 540s (I have the same set up) You can still have an external GPS antenna.
My set up is a 545s with a transducer, seperate water temp sensor, GXM 31 and external GPS antenna puck. Once you have it installed, call XM/Sirius and start subscription using the unit ID# that will show up on your machine... takes about 15 minutes on the phone. (don't hang up til your seeing weather and hearing the radio stations, they never get it right the first time and if you hang up, you start over)
If you dont find a super deal on Ebay, I have a NIB GXM31 ($125.00 shipped) that I wont be needing, PM me.

If the original poster does not want it and it's new in box with the mounting hardware I'll take it. Sent you a PM as well.

We took "Siesta" off shore to the BVI with the Caribbean 1500 using a garmin 545 and XM31. I bought the Bluecharts on SD cards for the Bahamas and the Eastern Caribbean, and had everything we needed for a successful trip, for much less than a thousand dollars. Do it.

I'm looking at purchasing XM weather for a 540 also....which service plan did you buy from XM? Will the SkyWatch plan show Radar or do you have to move up to the Fisherman?

Thanks
Andy

SkyWatch is not compatible with all XM WX displays that includes Garmin 400/500/4000/5000/6000/7000. So your choices are Fisherman/Sailor/MasterMariner.

Go with the Fisherman.
