Default Garmin GPS Blinding me at night

I was just down in Abaco and coming home at night and had substantial trouble seeing to the bow of the boat because of the light that my bottom machine was emitting.

It is inside of a pilot house so its not like I can pop my head around the corner of the console. Does anyone have any suggestions because when I turn off the machine I do not have a course or plotter to help me navigate.

Thanks.

Did you depress the power key momentarily then adjust the brightness to it's lowest level and do you have it set to auto night colors?

Welcome to The Hull Truth. As the two previous guys said. Depress the power button, but only for a second. You should be able to arrow down to control the brightness.

Forget auto, just tap power button, and scroll to lower brightness. Takes 5 sec. 2nd to lowest setting works great. It's dangerous driving blind

4000 and 5000 series are too bright for night use even if dimmed fully down. The newer models can be dimmed down to comfortable level for night use.

when navigating at night, i turn off the bottom machine because i do not need it. i have my VHF on but covered with a small towel and i have the GPS at the lowest light setting possible. i do this at least a few minutes before starting to run so that my eyes can get use to it. it takes a while for your eyes to dilate.

Also, make sure you apply the latest software updates. One of the software updates adjusted the dimming level. But also it is important to pick Day or Night mode (or set it to Auto), and then adjust brightness. The night mode all the way down, is much dimmer than the Day mode all the way down, so it does make a big difference what mode you are in when you adjust the dim setting.

You can download the manuals for most Garmin products from the Garmin website. Reading the manual will instruct you on how to dim the screen and explain many other features on your particular unit.

However, I think (not 100% sure!) the newer 4000 and 5000 models also have better (aka get dimmer) back lights than the original ones. I just sold my 5215, and I had one of the first ones (bought when they first came out) and mine was nowhere near dim enough at the MIN setting and in Night colors. When I was pulling into my canal/dock on dark nights, I always had to cover up the unit with the cover or something, or just kill it altogether so I could see.

I just upgraded to the 7215, and can tell you it is MUCH better!! They obviously addressed that issue with the new units. The 7215 goes down to pure black which will be nice.

The 4210's never dimmed enough. I have had three 4210's of varying ages and they are all the same.

BTW, my neighbor's 4212 dims perfectly.

Well, the OP never stated which model he had so it's pretty hard to give accurate directions.

Regardless, If my GPS (or anything that lights up) were causing me a problem in the dark and the controls would not dim it to my satisfaction, I would buy a piece of window tinting film and cut it to size and just place it over the screen (place it, not install it) to reduce the brightness. Remove it and store it when its not needed.

When you can let us know which unit you have and we'll see if we can help you, not all Garmin units will dim as low as you'd like to keep your night vision, some units when you dim them down they also dim the buttons to a level you can't see them, my 4210 is better than my 2006 was so they are getting better.
