Default How to disable Lowrance HDS Marine Zone alarm?

I have an HDS-10 with Sirius satellite weather antenna LWS-1. The HDS has the latest version 4.1 software. Does anyone know how to turn off the "Marine Zone" alarm and make it stay off until I want it back on? I can go into the weather options menu, and select "Alarms" and uncheck the blue circle. The circle turns black as expected, and I can go back into the Alarms menu later and the circle is still black. Unfortunately, when there is bad weather expected, the system seems to turn that alarm back on by itself. The result is that every 15 minutes or so, the system is beeping at me again. This might be a software feature intended to override the user option and warn about the bad weather, but the result is just the opposite. The marine zone alarms predict weather well into the future. For example, increasing winds after midnight can generate a small craft advisory. Since I intend to be home well before that, I want to ignore the alarm, but I cannot. The only way I can avoid the constant beeping is to turn off power to the Sirius antenna. With the antenna disabled, I no longer have access to the storm and lightning warnings that I really do want to have.

You may need to hit enter after unchecking it to save the settings

If you hit "enter" it re-enables the alarm. I hit "exit". After that, I can go back and look at the menu again, and the alarm will be disabled (the circle is black). Therefore, I am pretty sure the system is properly disabling the alarm. The problem is that it does not stay disabled when a marine warning is received.

Have you looked in the ADVANCE settings under RADAR? Maybe somewhere in there you can turn OFF some/all alarms. I don't have weather so I have not ventured into that area.

I don't want to turn off all the alarms. I can stop all weather alarms by turning off the power to the satellite antenna, but this stops the approaching storm and lightning alarms, which are really nice to have. I was 40 miles off St. Augustine last summer. 2 foot seas. 10 knot wind. I knew the wind was picking up to 25 the next day, and the marine zone warning kept going off. I turned off the Sirius antenna to stop the noise. When I restarted the Sirius to head back in, I saw a wall of storms still on land with lightning, headed my way. If my antenna had been on, I would have headed in a little earlier and avoided the storm completely, as I have done many times before. Because of this issue, I was unaware of the severity of the storm and ended up punching through 10 miles of rough seas.

How often SHOULD the alarms warn of impending danger? What I am saying is have you checked the ADVANCED section for any options on the alarms? Maybe you can change it to once every hour. What was it you were doing 'many times in the past'?

Select Alarms from the Settings Memu then press enter.

then ...

Highlight Settings and press enter.

then ......

From the list of alarms check or uncheck the ones you want to turn on or off. There are a number of weather alarms that can be selected.

Default Answer from Lowrance

Our R&D team has been made aware of the issue. To resolve this issue in the meantime, There is another way to disable this: Go into the Alarms menu under settings and disable the "Severe weather" alarm under weather. This is the same thing as marine zones, and has nothing to do with Lightning/Storms/, when you turn this off you have turned off the Marine Zones alarm. To re-enable it just go back into the alarms settings and turn it back on.

Please let us know if we may be of further assistance.

Lowrance Customer Service

I am very pleased to get a competent response from Lowrance in less than 24 hours. I will test this. I have to wait for a severe weather warning to verify that when the alarm is turned off using this alternate menu and name it does not turn itself back on. I also need to verify that I can still get lightning and approaching storm warnings.

What I have done many times in the past is see on my chart plotter the exact shape, size, speed and direction of a storm so I can drive around it, or select the thinnest portion to run through. This is the feature that makes satellite weather worth the cost.

Thanks Tom. I thought it was in the advance settings, but I was wrong.
