Default Lowrance 83/200kHw vs. 50/200kHw ducer??

I am looking for some guidance. I recently picked up a used Lowrance HDS7 Insight that came with a standard 83/200kHz transom skimmer transducer. I predominatly fish coastal water from MD-NC as well as the Chesapeake Bay. The question I have is will the 83/200 provide for good detail or should I look to upgrade to the 50/200 transducer? Thanks.

Good Choice on the unit. You will love it.

When I bought my HDS-5 from Jim @ BOE he suggested that I connect an AIRMAR P66 Tri-ducer to it instead of the ducer that comes with the HDS unit.

The AIRMAR was great for me. Jim wouldn't have suggested it if he didnt know it was a better choice. The same suggestion will probably work best for you as well.

Good Luck. Stop by BOE and ask them. If you are in Queenstown, BOE is 10 mins from you, but Im sure you already know that .

I have the 83/200 transom mount transducer and it works well for in shore areas. The 50/200 is more suited to deeper water but the 83/200 works there as well but won't get bottom in quite as deep water. I'd stay with the one you have.

Have yet to get the 83 function on my hds 5 to work. I fish 5-50' of water most of the time and leave it on 200.

Jacksdad - what do you mean the 83 wont't work? Just returns noise?

I assume you are changing the frequency selection from the Sonar menu? Are you presented with 200 and 83 as choices? Anything else?

Have you selected the right xducer from the configuration menus? Just curious why the 83 is not working for you......

Yes just noise. Have correct tx selected but can't get a good return. Wasn't happy with machine at all really until I set to 'slow troll'. That on 200 looks good.

I doing some reading I've learned the 83/200 xducer that comes with the HDS is not really a dual-frequency transducer but rather a 200 kHz xducer and the unit is not "filtering" out some of the signal to effectively emulate 83 and "see" out into the side lobes of the 200 kHz signal.

So, it sounds like either a configuration issue with settings of some type or a transducer installation issue - what type of water are you fishing in and are you trolling at speed, stopped (or using trolling motor), etc.
