Default NEW PROBLEM transferring waypoints from Mapsource to Garmin 7212

After receiving advice from knowledgeable forum members, I prepped an SD card in one of my 7212s. I then downloaded waypoints from a GDP file in my Documents on my laptop. This file contains and places waypoints on my Garmin Mapsource program. However, I canNOT download this GDP file to my 7212.

What is a GDP file? How can I get the waypoints from my Mapsource file to the 7212?

I have tried all kinds of solutions and am still not able to do it. I do not want to individually transfer thousands of waypoints!

If I remember correctly (I used to have a Garmin 545 but now have Furuno) the file you are uploading has to be in an .ADM format. I used a program called GPS Utility to convert the file to the .ADM format. Perhaps the Garmin 7212 requires the .ADM format.

Good Luck.

hmmmmm it's been a while since I used Mapsource for anything.... If you put the SD card into the 7212, it should be formated and a file installed on it called Garmin.??? which puts your device info and serial number in it. When you select transfer data (I forget how to do that in Mapsource?), it will ask for where to transfer to, you drop the box down and select the "7215". It will copy the data to it.

Although it does need to be an .ADM file format, no need to "convert the file", Mapsource shoudl do that for ya. Just make sure you first put the SD card into the 7212, then into Mapsource.... in the 7215, select Information, User Data, Data Transfer, To Card. This will create a starting point on the SD card.

The new program which is a bit better to use is Homeport (also by Garmin). In Homeport you simply put your card in the slot, and tell it to send the data to the SD card. Homeport will also read directly in, the old Mapsource data.

Homeport costs $30 and can be downloaded from Garmins site.

As Birdman said, skip the GDP file and load the prepped SD card directly from Mapsource, click "Send to Device" and it should fine the 7212 path on card.

Yep. No need to convert anything.

How do I transfer userdata (waypoints, routes, and tracks) from MapSource to my GPSMAP 6000 or 7000 series chartplotter?

Stick a MC card in the chartplotter, turn on unit, this will put a file on the card with the unit I.D., take the card out and put it in card reader in your PC, choose data you want in Mapsource and click"Send To Device" it should download data to the card, take card from PC back to chartplotter and follow instructions on screen.

Yep, Ken T is correct. Make sure in Mapsource you use the transfer menu, select send to device. A dialog window appears and you select your pre-initialized card from the drop down box, and it should read your unit model number. Select that device and transfer.
After transferring, open a new file in Mapsource and read it back in, to verify everything loaded correctly.
Once on the boat and at the device, load the SD card and the unit will ask do you want to merge or replace the data on the card with what is on the Garmin unit. Just follow the bouncing ball.
Should not be problematic.

Thank you very much expert hulltruthers! I followed the advice of Birdman and KenT and used the TRANSFER tab on the Mapsource and inserted my SD card and everything worked perfectly. I transferred waypoints to both of my 7212s. Thanks again to the helpful legion from Hulltruth!

If you buy Home Port you can bring over your maps which makes it easier to work with.

With Home Port you can copy the maps from your chartplotter to a card and see them on your PC. When you remove the SD card they are gone. If you have Bluechart already in your Mapsource they will load to the Home Port and you can use them without the card. I keep a card in my 4212 in case I want to save a screen shot,

I initialized my SD card using my 7212 as described above. I then saved my waypoints to the card via Home Port (gpx format) from my laptop. Then, I loaded the SD card into my 7212, transferred the file (user data) but cant see my waypoints on the map. I double checked the card by loading it back in my laptop to verify the waypoints are there, they are. Ay ideas what I'm screwing up?

In HP you must 'send to device' not save to SD card.

Thank You! I kept trying to "export" the data but "send to" worked perfectly.
