I have a problem buying used electronics. Electronics are changing all the time...new features, etc. There're coming off a boat for a reason. I'd rather have new; it'll get old quick enough...fast. If it is still under warranty from manufacture and a current model, I might take a chance. Most of the stuff you don't know, it's bad, until it's installed. Your labor and frustration have got to be worth something.

With electronics so important nowadays I'd be hard pressed to buy anything used. Maybe something used if were to serve as a backup device, depending on what it was. Generally, I'd rather have a run-of-the-mill device that was new instead of the top-shelf used gizmo.

If you are driving a 5 series beemer why do you need to buy used? Just kidding. This spring I purchased a used radar, and a used vhf antenna. In general I like to buy used. I think of it as supporting recycling. You can save thousands of dollars, and you can use those thousands for all the other expenses of boating. When buying used I like the unit to meet three criteria. The first is it has to be a total deal. For me that means less than 1/2 the price of new. The second is that I get to try it out before I buy it, or else I get a moneyback guarantee that it works. The third is it has to be a name brand with a good reputation.
