Default NMEA Interfacing Confusion (again)...

Well I thought I understood how to interface my electronics until I started to lay it all out on paper.

Manuals indicate the following wire functions:
- Furuno 600L (Talk to GPS and Receive from GPS)
WHT=DATA OUT(+)
BLK=DATA OUT (-)
YLW=DATA IN (+)
GRN=DATA IN (-)

- GPSMAP76 (Talk to all and Receive from 600L)
WHT=DATA IN
BRN=DATA OUT
(Why isn't there a + and - pair for DATA IN and another for DATA OUT?)

- Standard Intrepid+ (*Receive form GPS Only*)
BLU= DATA IN (+)
GRN= DATA IN (-)
* GRY= DATA OUT (+)
* BRN= DATA OUT (-)
* DATA OUT from the Intrepid is apparently only useful if you are using a Standard Horizon GPS so I intend to leave these disconnected.

- Floscan 9000 (Receive from GPS)
WHT/ORG= DATA IN (+)
GRN/BLK= DATA IN (-)

I guess my main bit of confusion is with the GPSMAP76... Why isn't there two wires (+ and -) for DATA IN and DATA OUT? Instead they just list a single wire for DATA IN and a single wire for DATA OUT.

It was my understanding that I should connect the DATA OUT (+) of the talking device to the DATA IN (+) of the receiving device. How do I do that if there are no + and - designations on the GPSMAP76?

I'm sure this is basic... I just don't want to fry anything testing this out...

The 76 uses the black (power negative) as the common NMEA ground.

Basic 76 to 600 connections

76brn -> 600ylw
76wht -> 600wht
76blk -> 600blk -> 600grn

Cheers, Kerry.

I never get lost, everybody tells me where to go!

You can use the gpsmap's ground wire for the DataIn(-) wire. It will work fine.

Tie these wires together and your good to go.

NEMA source - GPS
(+)-------------------------------
GPSMAP76:BRN=DATA OUT
Furuno 600L:YLW=DATA IN (+)
Standard Intrepid:BLU= DATA IN (+)
Floscan 9000:WHT/ORG= DATA IN (+)
(-)------------
GPSMAP76:BLK=ground
Furuno 600L:GRN=DATA IN (-)
Standard Intrepid:GRN= DATA IN (-)
Floscan 9000:GRN/BLK= DATA IN (-)
-------------------------------

NEMA source - Furuno 600L
(+)-------------------------------
Furuno 600L:WHT=DATA OUT(+)
GPSMAP76:WHT=DATA IN
(-)------------
Furuno 600L:BLK=DATA OUT (-)
GPSMAP76:BLK=ground
-------------------------------

As you can see a terminal block would be a handy thing, considering the quantity of wires being jumpered together.

Thanks... Went down to the boat this evening and quickly wired it all up. Used a waterproof juntion box -- definitely makes the connection more manageable.

This site is great!
