Default extending nmea 1803 wiring

Can it be done? I want to hook up my Yamaha FM/speed combo gauge to my garmin 3210. I have searched and seen the numerous post on the topic. I think i know how the wires are supposed to be connected.

My issue is that the wire coming out of the gauge is too short to reach the garmin output wire.

Can it be extended? How would people suggest it be done?

Thanks for the help

Use small gage wire to extend the wires. splice them up, your good to go.

I assume I should use a similar gauge wire. The smallest marine wire i can find is 18 gauge. Maybe radio shack has the smaller stuff?
