I'm throwing a vote for Garmin. I have the 276c and has been great. You may want to look at the Oregon series.

Garmin GPSMAP76 if you can find them, they are discontinued, simple to use, try to avoid the newer models if you want it to be functional.

Clearly the best handheld GPS receiver is the JAVAD Triumph-VS, but at US-$12,000 it is a bit more expensive than some of the other suggestions.

I actually like my Delorme PN60 better than my last two Garmins.....$20 gets you unlimited downloads of 8 different types of mapping and imagery files worldwide....waterproof....outstanding accuracy....lots of different functions. I even have NOAA maps loaded for a backup when out on water.....

You can even get it with the SPOT function which is priceless in itself for back country or offshore expeditions....and they come with the excellent Delorme Topo North America program...etc.
