And some owners are simply upgrading from very good old N/S units to their newer cousins the Simrad NSE s and NSS s that can multifunction with Broadband radar and Downscan 3D or other greatly improved sonar systems. I still have a couple 952s and love them because they are so very user friendly but wouldn't mind an NSE system one bit if anyone is offering to donate. ;?

The northstars break - water comes thru the keyboard....a lot are upgrading as one went out and they are switching as the other will go too. And northstar is discontinued and parts are drying up fast.

But simrad/ navico knew that the northstar interface was among the best out there, so they rebuilt it and called it the simrad NSE - which stands for "Northstar Edition"

I have been very happy with their products including their reliability....used them in Australia for several years and found them consistently more reliable than their Lowrance equivalents.

I want a larger Multifunction screen and would have been happy to purchase a 660, M84 or M121...Turns out i found a re-badged Northstar M84..Sold as Simrad NX40 for $1000.

As far as why you are seeing so many on the market now:

When Northstar/Navico killed this brand in the US they heavily discounted the remaining stock which drove down prices across the board. As other people have mentioned this also telegraphed to existing customers they would be hard pressed to service their gear and no extensions/integration/accessories would be forth coming...

I have ordered the GPS Y adapter for my 657 from four vendors ....all of which accepted the order than later canceled due to no stock. (Now that i have M84/NX40 i don't really need this cable now as the M84 uses a different cable as Saltydog pointed out)

That's too bad. I sold one on here for about $50 last year. I had a hard time getting rid of it.
