Default HDS-7 and P79 Transducer

Got some great advice earlier on my options for transducers but want to narrow it down further before I buy. Does anyone have any experience with the Lowrance HDS units and the in-hull P79 transducer. Looking for someone that actually runs this combination. All advice, good and bad is welcomed. Trying not to drill another hole in my boat but I will if I am not going to get good results with the P79.

Additional Info:
This will be on a straight inboard boat.
I fish in 30 -200 feet of water and boat cruises at 23 knots.

As long as you mount it forward of the running gear it should be fine, I have that set up and it works great.

I have the same combo (only on HDS8). Absolutely OK for the depths you are going and never lost bottom for me at any speed (around 30 knots). Good picture and - once it set up properly - never gives any worries (like wrong alignment, hitting something, extra water turbulence, etc). You need to pick up the place to mount carefully though (on my boat there is a dedicated hatch for in-hull so it was no brainer).

I have installed TM260 now (better sensitivity, more depths) but decided to keep P79 (with the switch installed) as a backup ducer - just because it always works.

I have the HDS 10 with that transducer about 2 foot forward of the outboard in my bass boat and the LSS transducer on the transom for Structure scan. Works great!
