Default Lowrance HDS-5 bought in USA

Hi All,

New to the forum and hope someone can help. I bough an HDS-5 whilst in th USA recently and it works fine here in South Africa but there is a flashing message on the botom of th screen "This unit is not meant fo use in your area please conact you local seller" The local seller wont help. Is there any way to get rid of this message?
Thanks Steven

Steven the simple answer is there is no easy way to get rid of it. As someone else said its a system called GEO Fencing that Lowrance use to discourage people from buying overseas where the units may be cheaper than their local dealers. I have heard that if you install an older version of the software you may be able to get rid of it but have no idea how this is done.

wow...that sucks....and you don't even get warned about that when you buy! I buy in the US all the time for use here in the Caribbean. Never had any issues yet.

the old software version work on with HDS-8 & HDS-10. But with HDS-5 & HDS-7, you will get a softkey mark instead of said flashing.

Default Lowrance geofencing question?

Hi everyone, just joined the forum. All of your info on the Lowrance geo fencing was a very good one, thanks. I live in Perth, but am currently in Arizona and was considering purchasing an HDS-7. But now I am reconsidering doing so. My question is, I wonder if I activated the units GPS here in the US and then took it to OZ. would it still be geofenced?

Yes, it'll be. If you buy and Hds8 and downgrade to 2.51 it'll work but if you do it in a 5/7" the unit will think it's a hds8 version and the small menu for the softkeys will be in the display and is not possible to delete it. You will loose a part of the screen in a small unit

I would go for the HDS8

So if you are traveling around the world, don't buy a Lowrance. Seems limiting.

Check out Simrad....as a Norwegian company, they are more atuned to the evils of export licensing.

The Humminbird is also Geofenced.

Outside of the U.S you need the 1198cx SI.

I hope someone can get us a patch. But, now that Hummingbird is doing it as well as Lowrance, this is interesting. Not good. Isn't GPS "Global"??..............come on man!!!!

GPS is US Military....Developed by the Navy.....Operated now by the Air Force when Space responsibility went to the Air Force from the Navy. There are other GPS-like systems in the world....we just don't use 'em. And they suck compared to GPS.

Greg, I had the same dilema. If you get that message, Lowance in OZ want $500 something to fix it.
Suggest when you get back to Perth, Contact CH Marine in Melb. They seem to have the best prices on the HDS. I want a HDS for Christmas, but alas the war office says it won't be coming this year.

First I've heard of Humminbird's being Geofenced. I bought a 788ci HD DI in August and just updated the software two days ago with zero problems. ;?

As a previous poster stated, buy a Humminbird instead if you specifically want side or down imaging or Simrad, Furuno, Raymarine. Personally I'll never buy another Lowrance product again.
