Default Simrad AP 11 Help!

I would start off with a check of the rudder position sensor. Turn on the ap11 and go to standby-com. At the very top of the display, vertical bars show the position of the rudder. Center the engines and there should be no vertical bars. Move the steering hard right to the stops and the bars should appear from the center to the right. Move the steering all the way to hard left and the bars should move from full right to full left. If you do not get that display, then the rudder sensor is the problem.

If the above test is OK, then I would check out the hydraulic pump. Remove the 2 leads that feed the pump from their terminals. Touch one of the pump wires to +12 volts and the other wire to ground. I say touch because the pump will drive the steering to the stops in one direction and you want to remove the wires before it drives into the stops. Reverse the above touch procedure of the wires and the pump will drive the steering to the opposite stops.

If both of the above tests work OK, then I would do a Master Reset of the Unit. This means a complete re-initialization of the unit which is explained in the Simrad book. Before going to that, recheck all of the wire terminations at the Junction Box and be sure they are all OK.

Default Simrad AP 11 Help!

Gil-With motors straight,I have all of the vertical bars on right side only. When turning full left about 25% of them disappear. When pushing the left arrow or setting compass, motors will turn left.

There is no bars on the left, and when pressing right arrow or setting compass, motors will not do anything.Totaly dead, and silent.

AC, the fact that you only have the bars on the right side indicates either the rudder sensor is bad or seriously out of alignment. With all of the bars showing up on the right side, the ap11 thinks the engines are already at the right stops and that is why it will not drive in that direction.
My suggestion is that you try to re-align the rudder sensor. Since there are about 3 different sensors that Simrad uses, you will have to go to the AP11 Manual for the alignment instructions for your particular type. My AP11 uses a Teleflex sensor and the alignment consists of moving a fixed magnet that is hose-clamped to the hydraulic cylinder. You center the engines, loosen the hose clamp, and slide the magnet while observing the bars on the display. When no bars appear in either direction, that is the center and you tighten the hose clamped magnet.
Take a look in your Manual and see what alignment instructions are given for your unit. Frankly, it sounds like the rudder sensor is bad, but since they ain't cheap, I would certainly want to confirm that before replacement. You may have to go to the Master Reset function in the Alignment Procedure section of the Manual and start over. That will confirm a component failure.

I just installed an AP 11 on my boat. You can down load the manual from Simrad's website. You may just need to go thru the dockside set up. The is a setup to adjust the for the center position. The interface is a black box that converts the analog signal from the rudder feedback into a digital signal that feeds into the control box. Good Luck.

Thank you AC, your response is appreciated. It is unfortunate that many others do not show the courtesy of responding to the solution of a problem.

Gil: It may not be a problem of others not having the courtesy of responding with a solution to the problem as I doubt if too many other than you knew of a solution . . . . . . . . and in addition to AC, many others, my self included, who have not posted, appreciate your sharing your knowledge.
