Default XM/Sirius signal strength

I have the Garmin GXM 51 antenna which is mounted inside my console and it works perfect most of the time for music and weather.
Occassionally the music drops out . The signal strength indicator shows a very weak signal when the music drops off, otherwise it shows a full strength signal.
Garnin told me to call XM about a possible "Dead Zone" and the tech at XM told me to talk to GARMIN.
I wonder if the XM antenna needs to see the sky completely unobstructed like my GPS antenna.
Any ideas out there?

I think it's best to give the antenna a full view of the sky. Anything the signal has to pass through will attenuate the signal. You could be in a marginal reception situation and when a metallic part of your console just happens to be between the antenna and the satellite, you lose the signal.

I have seen this quite a bit. These units have poor reception in ANY pilothouse, regardless of what its made of, ie fiberglass nor aluminum.

You have to mount that antenna outside, period.

I really have very little confidence in the pict-o-gram crap the plotter says is a display of it's reception. It's a lie. A mis-truth at best.

Default XM Radio

The XM radio signal is twitchy. Their satellite is in the southern sky and just about anything can block it. There is one spot in my neighborhood that the signal drops off for about a half a block EVERYTIME I pass thru. So mount it clear of anything on the roof.

Mine is mounted in full view of all the sky and it NEVER drops the music. Now I have experienced the music fade strong to weak sometimes when I have the Bimini open.

The manual says to mount it lower or higher than the radar dome.
If I mount it on top of the T-top it will be in at he same height as the radar.
Any suggestions?

According to the Garmin GXM 51 Manual "To ensure the best reception, mount the GXM 51 antenna in a location that has a clear, unobstructed view of the sky in all directions."

They also list all the other important installation considerations.

Flush mount the antenna if possible. Or you can get extensions and put it up higher than your dome, but personally I don't like the way they look

Just flush mount on you top and be happy.
