178c is combined GPS/FF, the other two are GPS only. The 182c screen is brigher and clearer and slightly larger than the 172c You have to compare them at the same time and you'll see that the 182c has the better display. There's also a 188c, by the way.

In my opinion, both the 188c and 178c are too small to try to see both fishfinder and GPS....just not enough screen space. You are better with separate units for ff and GPS if you have the space and the money

Have had the 182C for 2 years great machine. I did have to take the non glare coating off the screen as it began to spot.

Not a big fan of incorporating units (ala Garmin 178C) but.................

Go here and Punch in the Models you want to compare.

http://www.garmin.com/marine/compare.jsp

The 172 has a smaller screen size but it has a higher screen resolution and works the best in direct sunlight and is also a couple hundred cheaper than the 182c.

Depending on your mounting options (Direct Sunlight vs Electronic Box vs Enclosed Cabin) and your personal eyesite, that will dictate which one best fits your needs.

I have a Garmin 172c on the Bridge of my Bertram 28 (Direct Sunlight) and I am able to mount it close to my line of site.

I have a Northstar 952 on my Parker (Enclosed Cabin 2520DVSC) but if I were to replace this unit, I would opt for the Garminin 182c.

They are both Great Machines.

What kind of boat are you putting these on? What is your budget? This should help in recommendations.
