Question Which Garmin Chartplotter Unit to buy ?

I'm looking at the Garmin GPS Chartplotters & trying to decide on which unit to buy. Like the 740S. I will use it for coastal fishing in Mississippi & Louisiana. Thanks for any assistance.

I have the 720s (same as the 740 w/o the preloaded map) and added the Blue Vision g2 Gulf of Mexico card. Awesome machine.

I've had the 545s and I loved it. When it came time to upgrade I went with the 4208. Garmin makes a great machine.

I have the 521s. Love it but wish that I had the 720S or the 740S.

I have a 6208, and can't see any reason to not have a 740s.

Or a lowrance sctructure scan unit.

We upgraded older Lorance to a Garmin 441s this year. Found the larger 5xx series display had less detail and slower processor unacceptable. On our smaller(Grady 20 Adventure) boat the larger more expensive unit was not necessary

Frugal may be mixing his metaphors. The 4" and 5" Garmins share processors and their redraw speeds are a function of the resolution. Higher middle numbers distinguish higher resolution screens on both generations. The current generation have a faster processor (and N2K) for faster redraws, and the lower resolution screens available in both sizes draw slightly faster. In practical use, the redraw speed is hardly as important as clarity, accuracy, and the ability to turn on or off various classes of data.

What's most important for me is what can be displayed on Garmins and no other small Chart plotters: XM weather, and on the current generation, engine data.

Answer - none of the above.

Get a Lowrance HDS series unit in your price range.

What's a metaphor....

Care to explain this.

In practical use, the redraw speed is hardly as important as clarity, accuracy, and the ability to turn on or off various classes of data.

I find just the opposite.

Because the smaller screen displays less of the actual chart it's more important to have fast scrolling when underway.

I have the 546s and the speed is good. I think that i read somewhere that it is much faster than 545s.

Redraw speed is function of the amount of data displayed. That is controlled by your zoom and what additional features you have selected to be displayed. When you are moving fast, reduce the the options displayed, such as higher resolution on the world map.

But I sense a hidden agenda in this discussion!
