Welcome aboard. Good question; I doubt it.
I'm glad the work horizontally!

NO!!
You may get lucky with a few, but I would not recommend it.

My Jensen, which I am not recommending, states that it will skip if more than 15 degrees off of horizontal. You can assume what it will do if mounted vertically.

I had one, and gave up on it. The vibration killed it after about 2 months. So I went back to a Cassette player that had a CD Input. And from that I use a shock mounted "NOMAD" player for MP3s. I can set up what I want, play 30 hours or more of music from a pre-selected program, and not worry about it.
The Nomad is very durable and shockproof and I get to take it home.
Works for me.

My 2002 Monterey 302 has a Sony multidisc player mounted vertically under the galley seat in the storage bin. So far it seems to work perfectly.
Also interesting to note, in my Mercedes Benz the cd changer is also mounted vertically in a rear storage bin, and it has never skipped once...

Step into 2003 and forget CD's on the boat. Go digital and have hours of skip free music in playlists of your choice. Compact, lightweight, high quality. You can incorporate it into your present sound system, or use it stand-alone. Digital (IMHO) is the way to go.

The problem with mounting CD players vertically is NOT skipping. It is the CD getting stuck/jammed when inserted or ejected. Almost all the CD players will play the CD ok, but they can NOT handle insertion the eject properly when the CD is sideways. What happens is the CD on the way out or in, slips and gets jamed against the side of the player. Some units will automatically shut down and go into lock mode requiring service to get it out.
As for CD changer units, they are built to be sideways, most are installed that way to save space. They load CD's differently, the CD is held tightly the entire route of being inserted a ejected and stored in the holder.
Again, like I said, many players will work, but it is hit or miss wether it will or not, and if you call the manufacturers, almost all will tell you they don't support it mounted sideways.

update on vertical CD player:
Kinda wierd...bought a "West Marine" unit...sure it is made by someone else but who?
CD goes in and out with no problems but didn't play. You hear it sort of working inside and making noises and then the screen reads "error"..I hit the "mode" button which cycles the unit from "CD" to "Aux" then to "radio" and then back to "CD"...Then the CD plays fine?
I'll see if this works when the boat is actually in the water with bouncing around in the seas etc...
