Default Garmin issue help

Hey guys
have a garmin 545s I bought 6 months ago on clearance at the boat show really like had no problems until today. I was at a cruising speed when the screen just went blank and it shut off could not get it to turn back on thought maybe I blew a fuse brought the boat back in trailered home tried it again it turned on. On one of the screens it said abnormal shut down but no other info but my boat points west in the yard and on the screen it says north and when I use the curser and move it toward were I know south is it's showing me points north any help would be appreciated

Call Garmin support they are very good. If they can't help you then they will give you a RMA number to return the unit to them and they will send you out another one as long as you are still under warranty. You be back up running as soon as they get your unit they mail another one out to you that day.

Don't worry about the way the boat points. It isn't right until you're moving. And check that the display mode is North Up to reduce confusion when sitting still. Course Up and Heading Up modes can be confusing if you're not moving, particularly if you try to pan. I have a 546S and it comes up with the abnormal shutdown message if I turn the battery switch off before turning the Garmin off with it's power button.

More often than not this indicates a wiring problem. A loose wire. The plug and socket on the back of the unit where power is supplied is less than ideal. Undo it, clean it with electronic grade contact cleaner, apply a small dab of dielectric grease to the socket and pins, and reconnect it. Noe, if you have an inline fuse in the power lead, do the same to it. Then make sure the wires are clean and tight where they connect to the boat.

I wired a gps with the cheap fuse holder in a vertical position didn't have any trouble with it till I ran offshore in some stuff. I would look at the unit and it would be off after I had turned I back on had to think about that one for a little bit.

The omly way the Icon will point correctly when the boat is standing still is if the display is connected to a heading sensor.
