Default key switch problem?

i have a yamaha 150 outboard carb about 12 years old, lately when it has not been used for a while and i go to start it up,the key alarm will come on but further turning does not crank the engine.if i play with it a little it will start evntually.then after runnnig awhile i have no problem with it starting again.could this be a switch going bad,or some corrosion internally, would a squirt of wd-40 help.any advice appreciated.

What is the voltage at the battery and dash?

Check the key switch connections at the S terminal. If tight and with NO corrosion, try jumping from the B terninal to the S terminal. If it cranks you probably need to replace the switch . But first pull the ign. switch and with a VOM ohmmeter setting and all other wires carefully labeled & removed, test for consistant continuity between the B battery + terminal on the switch and the S solenoid terminal in the Start position. If there is consistent near 0 resistance , the problem is likely elsewhere.

If your battery is still good(can pass a load test) & well-charged with proper electrolyte levels , you could try jumping momentarily from Battery + to the starter solenoid big +terminal to see if it turns , and from battery - to the engine block ground connection.
