Default VHF ant. coax questions

I'm installing a VHF radio on my bay boat and don't need 15' of coax. Is there any negative effect on transmitting or receiving when using a short run of coax? Does it hurt anything to just coil up the extra coax under the console....or just cut it shorter? Thanks for any help you guys can provide.

I would coil it up in an 8" coil and secure it with plastic wire ties. No tight bends, please. You never know if and when you might have to cut it back to install a new connector. Length of the coax is not critical

Excellent, sounds like I did the right thing. I did have thoughts about needing more coax in the future, that was the biggest reason I didn't cut it! Thanks for the advice!
