Question What would you do with a 2K budget

I have 2000 dollars to spend on a VHF radio and a GPS fish finder combo. I don't go off shore a lot. Mostly in the sounds and around the ICW.

What I am leaning toward

STANDARD HORIZON
GX2100 VHF Radio with Built-In AIS Receiver, White 300.00
Garmin 720s 1500.00
Garmin 30 GPS antenna 70.00
Transom Mount Transducer with Depth, Temperature and Speed (6-pin, 200 kHz, 20 deg) 100.00

It will go in a sea hunt triton 210.

Don't forget the transducer!
Does a GPS antenna come with that unit?

More than 2k but now you got me thinking. My wife is going to be upset. Unless I don't tell her how much. I might be able to squeeze an extra 500 out of my wallet if it for better equipment.

the touch screen is good and all at the dock, but once your out in the boat the soft keys are much better. the 8.4 inch screen is also much better. I didnt list the GPS antennae because its not on the website but that costs around the upper 100s.

If you are fishing with the boat I would recommend the Simrad NSS7. GX2000 VHF (do you really need AIS?), Shakespeare 5400-XT antenna, Airmar P66 Ducer. When funds permit you can add StructureScan which would be awesome where you fish. Good luck!

No I don't need AIS. The simrad is worth a look. Thanks.

Love the NSS...but you could also do the HDS-7 with StructureScan...and the transducer comes with it. That will set you back $1600 or so. A decent VHF (Standard Horizon) is $150 or so...another $110 or so for the antenna.

The HDS-7 with Insight USA has decent mapping out of the box...but if necessary, you could spend the last $140 on a Navionics chip.

Garmin 740s is a really nice unit. It is faster than the Garmin 4xxx and 5xxx series and has the sounder built in.

And you don't need a GPS antenna for the 740s

Your $2K price-point is challenging...it will limit you to a smaller screen MFD, and fewer fish-finding options.

Being a non-fisherman, I know where I would sacrifice features...broadband radar would be nice, too, but certainly not within your budget.

Electronics depreciate very quickly...maybe you could do better with some recent used gear?
There are many boaters who upgrade frequently, and their used equipment gets sold at a major loss.

broaband radar is just a big hype....yeah it may perform good in really close ranges and have almost zero radiation, but its longer range is terrible for target finding. My buddy has the 3g broadband simrad on a 4 inch pedistal and a 4 degree wedge and has trouble finding boats that are a mile to 2 miles away. He is very dissapointed with its performance..he wishes he could go back to his navnet vx2 4kw dome

If he has the standard BR24 this is already replaced by BR24 3G which have comparable performance at long ranges as conventional 2kW domes.

BR24 3G is the winner from the large 2 & 4 kW 18' dome test in Practical Boat Owner (UK) this summer.

Easy! And you will have money left over for gas!

Standard horizon radio. My standard GX2330S is 13 years old;never a problem.
Go basic: Standard GX1150 for $108.

Shakespeare 5241R 3 foot whip antenna $55. Plus mount of your choice???

Raymarine A70d combo plotter/sonar. Soft keys, internal antenna, pre-loaded charts, transducer included. $1499 (less $400 mail-in rebate).

There you have it...for about $1300 plus some odds and ends.

Thank you for all the good ideas! I still have a few weeks before my boat is built so I will keep reading and playing at the store.
