I am looking for opinions on marine electronics packages. IE: Should I by a Radar/GPS/ black box sonar deal, or should I go with a Foruno 582/600, and seperate other stuff. I am getting dizzy from looking at the choices. I need compact, water resistant, price concious parts. I would lean in the direction of Higher quality fish finder, less $$ GPS etc. (i dont THINK i need all those chart functions... or do I. I think the Lowrance higher end stuff is cool, but have heard its junj=k, as well as Raymarine. (I hope this is not true as my Buddy just bought the whole Ray setup for his GW) Opinions welcome, experience needed!

I was here a few weeks ago and decided on separate chartplotter (Navman 5500) and Furuno 600. The Raymarine set up with DSM-250 "black box" was a real player but in the end was just too much $ vs the mix and match of components. I also wanted two screens ..one FF and one chartplotter...which would have meant even more money for another Raymarine viewer. Greg

Don't even think for a moment that Reytheon Government electronics and Raymarine are at all related. While the government undoubtably pays mucho for what they get, raymarine gives you recreational quality with a raytheon label.

I've saved all year for my electronics. Was within seconds of getting a Furuno 1650 WF combo unit. At the very last second (Iwas on the phone placing the order) I decided to get the 600L sounder. Great choice that I'll never regret. I got a Navman 5100 this past week. It's a nice unit with more features than I'll ever use. Will I regret not buying acolor plotter? Probably, but the mono plotter was 300 bucks and if I can't live with it I'll upgrade in two years. My .02.

Even when Raytheon owned the recreational division, and they haven't for over 3 years, they were seperate products as well as R&D.
In fact, it was mostly JRC equipment rebranded with the Raytheon name. There is now NO relationship between the two companies.

Hold on there just a minute. What's this crap? "(our) money can be spent like they don't own it"

I worked as a Contracting Officer for the Federal Government for about 15 years. During that time, although I did not keep track, I probably spent close to $3 Billion of "Our" money. In case you forgot we, Government employees, pay taxes too. I just want you to know that not only did the most stringent regulations in all of Government dictate that I spend every single dime of that money responsibly but in addition to that my personal integrity made me demand that the tax payer get every dime's worth of value they were paying for. If you have a problem with where Government spends money go talk to your Congress person, or whatever lobbiest is directing where our money goes, don't blame it on the Government employee who, at about a third less pay and benefits than his or her contemporarys in private business, is working their ass off every day to see that you get what you paid for. Too dam many folks around here starting to sound like that drug addict Limbaugh, and its just not right.

Half the time I try doing things just because I read some retarded blurb about it in the manual fully realizing I would NEVER use such a thing, but because the manual stated it could do it, I have to try it!!!"
