Default Inmarsat (Isat) Update

I need to replace a stolen Iridium sat. phone, and am leaning toward a new Isat. The only thing giving me pause is the delay in getting a connection while the handset gets a gps fix. I read the threads on this site that were started last year where this issue, among others, was discussed, including comments from Birdman in New York who was consistently experiencing delays of over five minutes. Does anybody know if changes in software since the Isat phones were introduced have reduced this delay? Or, any other current information about the pros and cons of Isat versus Iridium?
I will be using the phone in the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific off the Baja peninsula in Mexico.

Bill, were you not happy with the Irridium?

I used an Iridium 9505A for years and recently upgraded to a 9555. The voice quality and echo cancellation is significantly better on the 9555. FYI

I have the 9555 also and there was an update earlier in the year. I use my phone all the time and very happy with it. I buy the 1 year package and roll over whatever minutes are left. I normally get started within a minute or 2 after a cold start.

Hey guys, as a leading reseller for all the various satellite systems, I can tell you that it is normal for the Isat to take a few minutes to acquire a gps signal. This is required for it to register on the network. That being said, it is much cheaper to buy and to operate for voice calls.

Hppy to answer any further questions.

Dave.....I had my Iridium unit for about a year and a half and used it about 200 minutes before it was stolen. I fish offshore a lot and bought it as safety equipment. I was generally happy with it. Most of the time when I used it I was able to get a connection within a minute or two. I am now considering an Isat phone because from all I read, primarily here on TNT, the service is comparable to Iridium, with the exception of the delay in getting a gps fix with the Isat, and both Isat hardware and minutes cost about half the cost of Iridium. There is an issue with prepaid minutes for an Isat phone if it is used within 15 miles of the United States, but I live in Mexico and would never be using it in or close to the US. So, the purpose of my post here is to find out if perhaps the access delay has been reduced, or if anybody might have any other first hand information that would mitigate against getting an Isat.

Cool, thanks for the answer Bill. I just bought the 9555 for use in SE Ak and was curious why you weren't just getting another of the same.
