Default Furuno NavNet 3D Fish Finder help

When using my BBFF3 (ETR-30N) with a 2KW transducer (R-99 50/200) in deep water, over 1000 feet I want to see the top 250-300 feet only. What are the best settings? My image does not seem very good. If I use auto mode it wants to set itself to 10 or 15 feet due to surface interference. The top 50 feet always seems to have too much clutter, the advance seems slow, possibly because its waiting for a return from the bottom at 3000 feet????? How do you set your clutter? Time Advance Gain? Gain Level? etc?
