Default Garmin GXM51 mounting

Does anyone have their GXM51 mounted under a hard top, or under any other covering? What kind of reception are you getting with it?

I currently have mine mounted on a pole (that extends above my radar dome), and due to my hardtop not having a "liner", I can't change it to be flush mounted to my hard top.

I want to change it off the pole mount. Where do y'all have yours mounted?

I have mine mounted on my helm console under a bimini top. I have installed quite a few under T-Tops even put one inside an electronics box. All installs work as advertised.

Here's my install. I use 5200 to attach it to the surface.

Mine is mounted in a bracket inside the console. I also have a hardtop, so it is receiving through 2 layers of fiberglass. Overall pretty good with some minor interruptions when listening to music

Default GXM51 T Top and Compass

On a center console if you mount on the under side of the dash electronics box that will see satellites? Mine has thick wood for mounting things on the top.

Any concerns about the compass above. My boat is a Contender

Mine is under the console with the supplied bracket, no problem with weather reception XM will fade in and out if something like a drink can or tool is over the antenna on top of the console.

Why take it off the pole? I'm putting mine on a pole above the radar after having issues with my 30A.

The XM techs told me its best to have a clear sky since the weather is heavy data transfer. Ok to hide it for audio. Garmin says its ok if its wood or fiberglass covering it. The weather signal comes from the southern sky and a full N,E and W will not get full bars if S is blocked.

I tested it a little. With full bars i covered the unit with granite, hardy plank and particle board one at a time. Only the granite caused loss of bars. The others appeared to be invisible with no change in bars.

I wanted to take it off teh pole so I wouldn;t have to climb up and down to raise and lower it.

I have this GXM51 for sale now..was going to use it on the new boat but went with Lowrance instead.
