Default Garmin 8/24 email announcement...??

Anyone else get the email from Garmin?? It says "Get ready to be moved, 08/24/2011". I assume they are releasing a new product??

What is it?

Maybe they are finally going to get the engine gauges straightened out on the 42xx,52xx, 62xx and 72xx platforms?

But actually, I think thats when the GSD 24/26 go on sale.

My iPhone with a nav app does everything I need. It even reroutes around traffic.

Whats so compelling about a new nuvi?

Don't want a phone for navigation ... don't own no stinking I-phone, Droid, etc. All I want to do is talk on my phone not send e-mail, surf the net, take pictures, text etc. I answer very little email if it's that important someone will call if not all the better.

So what's so compelling about you IPhone?????? And no I don't won a NUVI LOL.

They must be doing something right with the NUVI it's a 100 mil a year in sales

garmins website keeps say 4th quarter for the GSD 24. I'd be surprised in they bring it out sooner.

Ya know, I never wanted an iphone. I was a blackberry guy. But regardless, I have one (a gift from my wife).

Now that I have one, the compelling part is I have zero reason to own a dash mounted gps system. I travel a LOT on business, and am in a rental almost every week. I live by the gps. I was going to buy a nuvi, but figured I'd give the iPhone I already carry a shot.

Guess what? It works as well or better than the in-dash one I have in my car. The screen isn't as big as the in-dash one, but it is as large as a nuvi, and has a lot of advanced features like traffic avoidance. The software was free to try, and only $20 a year to use (there is a free version but it doesn't have voice guidance enabled).

So what is so compelling about the iPhone is that I already carry it. It won't cost me an extra $400 to buy a Nuvi to do basically the same thing.

One less thing to carry.

Garmin has a big problem with the Nuvi. It's the same problem Flip ran into. Guess where Flip is now?

But I was being serious in my question. What is so compelling about the new Nuvi that it will rock my world? I like my world rocked. I don't like hollow marketing.

Rock on with your IPhone. Yea I guess there isn't any markets in vehicle havigation systems. Bottomline it represents a market segment that a number of companies have done well in. Flip on the other hand was some ones wet dream.

I'm just not a Blackberry, IPhone, Droid person.

I have a friend who relies on his phone for a GPS. Four of us went to a mountain resort using his phone for guidance. Once we lost cell phone coverage, it was useless. We got lost.

When we got back I ordered a Garmin portable GPS.

That isn't likely to happen with my software. It will download maps it needs ahead of time, assuming you remember to enter a destination before losing cell coverage. The gps is independent of cell service. Cell is used to obtain maps. I confirmed it does work through a long stretch of colorado where I didn't have cell coverage.

But I see the point.

I do have a built-in gps for the car. I just didn't see the need to also have a portable given the abilities of the phone.

I'm not saying it's for everyone. I was asking what, if anything, is noteworthy about the nuvi announcement. They did say we would be moved. Ok, so move me.

In the meantime, Garmin will still lose sales. It won't go to zero, but it is hurting them.

There are ludites out there who still don't use email or the internet either. That doesn't mean they aren't forces in the market.

What's wrong with a map? Totally cheap and no one ever busts my window out to steal my AAA Road Map Atlas. Gotten me back and forth across this country at least a dozen times. Half the time I was stoned out of mind on Dead Tour and that map still worked flawlessly.

What's wrong with a typewriter? What's wrong with a horse and buggy? Nothing except there are better ways now. I hate to see you trying to read that map while you're driving, but the GPS tells you when and where to turn. Now if I could just find a sexy voice to replace that female drill seargent in mine.

I plan ahead and plot my route ahead of time. I wouldn't read a map while driving.

We as a species are becoming really pathetic.
