Default fish finders what to buy?

Looking to purchase a fishfinder for my 34' Sea Ray. Cannot find any info on net regarding testing and / or reliability. As my kids will be making purchase (Xmas Gift) ant info would be welcomed. Would prefer small, as dashboard is already loaded with instrumentation

wherb,
Can't go wrong with Furuno. They make a great little 350 w. unit that works well for waters to about 1000' dp (specs say 1500). the FCVL600L is a dual freq color unit with lots of serious fishing features. Retail is over $800 but I think you can buy the unit on the web for about $600. If you are not all that into fishing, you can find a cheaper unit with less features. Guess I should have asked first what your needs in that area area. In any case, Furuno makes some of the best fish finders built today. Their cheapest unit sells for about $300 retail and you can go up from there to big $.
Have a happy holliday

Also a great unit ($1300), but about twice the space needed for the 600L. Wherb, go to a marine store, West, Boat US, ect and take a look. Look up web prices before buying. Some marine stores have high markups.
