Default Garmin 182C vs 188C

I have to buy my GPS soon and was all set to get the 182C. Now I am wondering if I should get the 188C to have the sounder capabilities, too. Any advice? Does the 188C give up anything by adding the sounder? Any recommendations on either unit (have heard many good things about the 182C).

Also, size is a consideration as I have limited space for this unit.

Thanks.

If space is an issue the 188 may be a very good choice since you can eliminate a seperate ff. One obvious thing you'll give up is screen size (if using both the gps and ff on split screen). I'm not sure if the unit processes any slower than each unit separately, but someone else might.

Now that the software has been updated you can guy a GSD20 to add to your 182c and it becomes a 188c for perhaps a few $ less

The only difference in looking at the 182c vs 188c that I see is in the unit's overall size 182c=6.18 x 6.3 x 2.6 and the 188c=6.18 x 6.3 x 3.25.

Also, salesman have told me that because of the GSD20 the 188c will be discontinued next year.

OK Thanks.

Anyone have any experience with the GSD20? Does the unit itself take up any space on the control console?

I found a description of the GSD20 on the Westmarine website, with a photo of the unit, but I can't figure out where the unit itself would be mounted.

Thanks.

I have my GSD20 mounted on a bulkhead behind my instrument console. The 20 has 2 cable connector inputs, one for the transducer and the second comes with the 20 with a connector on one end and about 6, #24 color coded wires on the other end. This cable feeds up into my e-box through the feed pipe where I terminated the wires on a terminal strip. The gsd20 wires include the +12, ground and NMEA In/out (sonar signal and control) and a couple of others.
I have the 20 feeding sonar data to both my 2006C and 182C in the e-box. You should not have any problems, but you are going to have to plan on a switch to control the +12v to the gsd20. The 2006C has a control wire that connects to the 20 such that when the 2006C is ON or OFF, it turns the 20 on or off. The 182C does not have this control wire so you will have to do the 12v switch routine. That's a bummer but you better plan on it.

I just bought the Garmin 182C. I didn't know this could be converted to act as a sounder too. I didn't see any mention of this capability on the Garmin website. I have a Furuno 600L but if the GSD20 can be connected to my 182C it would be a nice backup. Has anybody done this and if so, how did you do it.
