Default Fishfinder????

I am new to boating and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for a fishfinder in the 300-400 dollar range.

Garmin 240 or 240 blue depending on the depth of water that you will be boating in. Will cost you about $200 more to go into color...maybe a little more.

Garmin 160 Blue.....don't need to spend the extra money for the 240. They are the same except for pixel count, which you'll never notice...IMO

thanks for the suggestions guys. I was wondering if anyone knows anything about the Lowrance x88df. I was interested in that unit or the garmins, my boat is lacking a speedometer so i was looking to make that up with the fishfinder.

I'm presuming you don't have a cat? If you are monohull get a garmin with a speed wheel transducer and call it a done project.

For $400, the Raymarine L470 offers nice bang for the buck. Just make sure you install a Thru Hull ducer. Don't waste yoru time with a Transom or in-hull type.

Birdman,

Why not a transom type?
You peaked my interest.

UH OH here we go again on the hole in the bottom of the boat .
I have the same FF as the birdie (L470) and it works great.
It has all kinds of gadgets built in like Speed, volt meter, bottom lock, scope, great back lighting, etc.
You can set up the different pages that suits your needs.....pretty slick and it's super in direct sunlight.
It even has a sidelook transducer (optional) that mounts right on the transom mounted transducer which I have and it works perfectly at WOT......I must admit WOT for my boat is only 28 MPH.
The only thing it's missing is the color.

I my opinion ...it all depends on the given boat the transducer is being placed on. I have seen plenty of transom mounted TD working fine. I have also seen boats that needed the thru hull TD to work best.

I have a Lowrance x85 on my bass boat and it works great. I use the transom mount transducer with the temp and speed probe as well. If you are interested you can check on ebay for these as well.
I look at a fishfinder just like a rifle scope though buy one a little more than your budget seems to allow and in the long run you will be satisfed.
You may want to look at the color units when you get into 500-600 dollar range. It all depends on how much you use it and for what.
I upgraded to the furuno 600l on my CC and have not regretted spending the extra$$$ yet(heck the color unit even impressed my wife and she has no idea what she is looking at other that the colors)
