Default GPS headup or course up display

I am getting a new boat and will need GPS, Radar, and FF. I have been using a Humminbird GPS (that’s right they made a FF/GPS for a while) chart. There is one display that really like. It shows the boat icon with a pointed line protruding from it and a path line while showing the chart. You simply line up the boat icon protruding line with the path line, while being able to see all the chart data. What kind of display is this called and what other GPS have it?

I have a friend who just got a nice color Garmin, and I couldn’t find a comparable display on his. I was able to get his display from the default north up to what I assume was a head up, but with out any line protruding from the boat Icon. This made it really hard to see where the boat was aimed. Even though I am an accountant, I’m not into reading numbers and doing calculations in my head while offshore.
Thanks

I don't remeber what it's called but my Raytheon unit has it, a friend's Northstar has it, and I assume that most chartplotters do.

calls it the navigation page. I think what you are describing is the "graphical highway" where the line down the middle is your intended course and it shows you to steer left or right. You have to select a "go to" waypoint, then keep pressing the "page" button until you see the "highway".

Basically you get three different choices as to chart orientation, North Up, Track Up, and Course Up. North Up is pretty straight forward, the top of the display is the north, the right is east and so on. Track Up, which seems to be what you are refering to, has the direction your boat is currently pointing as up, so anything directly in front of the cursor on the screen should also be directly in front of you, Course Up is a bit different. If you have a GO-TO input to the GPS and you are navigating towards it then it will be at the top of the screen.

That make sense?

If I understand the question, I think my Garmin GPSMap 232 calls this a heading line (draws an extension from the end of the boat icon in the direction of travel). There's also a bearing line that's a black/white line pointing to the current navigation point.

To turn on this feature, hit the Menu key twice, scroll down to the Map tab, scroll right to the Nav Line tab, and turn on Heading Line. Hit the Quit key (maybe twice?) to get back to the map page display. It's easier and more intuitive than it sounds.

Thanks Fuzzy,
I went to the West Marine tonight, without your instructions and couldn’t do it. Either could the sales person and then I went through two Garmin manuals. I going to take your instructions tomorrow and try to do it again.
