I have new HDS also, no structure scan though. I am still trying to get the sonar and radar tuned correctly. I agree with you there are no real good tuning tutorials. It definitely takes some user time to figure these things out.
Once again, sorry for sounding like a dickhead, wasn't my intent!! chris

Hey Chris!
No offense taken! It's the varied population of this board that makes life interesting. It's also the general respect we have for each other in the boating community. It's nice to see. I look forward to future Navico products as I look forward to all other manufacturers products. It's the free competitive market that benefits us all.
Best regards
Ray

Navico went waaaaaay above and beyond. Ford doesn't come out and show you how to drive their cars.

Yeah, and it seems they went waaaay below and short on their manual. This isn't limited to one manufacturer, though. The documentation that comes with a Garmin bundle on how to actually use the equipment that has been shipped is absolutely ridiculous. It did include some very nice glossy four color brochures trying to sell me on G2 Vision charts, though.

Ford doesn't send a representative to show you how to drive your new car, but the owners manual for my F-150 is over 100 pages of very small print. On top of being able to look up how to roll a window down, I can visit one of the hundreds of dealers, who will personally show me how to roll my window down if I can't figure it out. Where the hell is my Garmin advisor? West Marine employees have a hard time telling me how much the bundle costs, let alone how to use it.

Unfortunately for consumers, electronics corporations have eliminated user's manuals from almost all of their product packaging. The equipment gets more and more complicated, and the user instructions are simply not there.

True but as long as you are making comparisons..........They have a dealer network that tries to do that at the showroom, and you can always drive it in and ask them questions. And it doesn't take a month and dozens of calls and emails to get one of them to offer to help either if you buy their flagship car.

But the other side of that is that you probably don't buy Fords over the internet and have them shipped to you.

Thank you for the update, and glad it has all worked out now. The only other thing I would add is that you could update the 1st post in this thread to summarize the out-come. If someone hits it on a search for Simrad & they don't get past pg 1 (never mind 2,3,& 4), they might be left with the wrong impression. I would say, depsite the time, Navico went above & beyond on this one to resolve your issue w/ the duplicate system and ultimately sending a rep.

I wouldn't be mad if I bought a Gibson guitar and it didn't make the same sounds that Slash makes with his.

The structure scan manual is pretty complete. There are really only three adjustments - zoom, contrast and frequency selection. The range thing is pretty straight forward too. I think the only reason Lowrance bent over backwards here was that an article was being written.....

The manuals for the Side Scan and HDS lack details. Navico could eliminate a lot of "issues" by developing good documentation for their products. I've got the HDS-10 and LSS-1.

Yea....we've been here before. They could do the very best and place it all plus more on an instructional DVD. Then we would be getting; 'Now I got to go get a dang computer .....', although that is exactly where I would like to see it. Get rid of the card slots and replace with the small CD/RW. BINGO! Worth another $300 to ya?

Get the picture?

I think the blue palette gives a very good contrast for StructureScan. Luckily the blue palette came with version 4.0 for HDS, prior to this only NSE had the blue palette.

I am working with tech support on transducer location options for a boat with keel - hearing that it may cause interference on the down scan portion of one of the transducers - i would like to get more info rom you about the relative location of the transducers inpparticualr to the keel.

I have had relative success with the transducers each about a 1.5 feet from the keel. My keel is about 3.5' and there does not seem to be any interference. What I WOULD suggest is that you locate them FORWARD of any other through hulls (like water pick ups) so they don't read any turbulence from other thru hull fixtures.

Not sure, but this may or may not help. I believe this was the final hookup of my setup, or very similar.

Here is a downscan image with my NSE 12 and LSS-1. I works great in the blue color mode. Remember this was taken in the Missouri, which is turbulent and muddy! In my opinion, it's unbelievable!

Downscan = bridge pylon (large brick or granite)
Sidescan = Bighead carp at 10' and above, and most likely catfish at 10' - 15' and below.

As a note: The World Record blue cat last summer (90% sure) was taken at this pylon. (131 lbs?) (downstream from the pylon picture)

Interesting thread and yes I read the whole thing! I think nitecapt was fair throughout. He was obviously frustrated and it showed. Most people would be the same.

Sounds like Navico certainly did try to resolve the issue with the sending out equipment and all but really dropped the ball with QUALITY customer support.

Why oh why did Navico not talk nitecapt through some of the basic settings early on?? Spending the resources to send out equipment to try and resolve the issue without doing the simple things first like running through the settings with the customer equals frustrated customer and wasted company resources. Hopefully Navico will learn at least a little something from their dealings with nitecapt. Hey, one can hope can't they?!?
