Default Stereo/CD Which is the best???

Checked through the archives, I see mostly speakers type request for info, but I am looking to install a new stereo/CD player and was wondering what everyone out there thought of the current crop of systems;Jensen, JVC, Clarion, etc.

I have a bridge boat and thought a wired remote would be a plus and have read previous posts on MP3 players (although these brands in marine catalogs don't seem to say that feature).

Ideally I would like one that would play 2-3 CD's without the addtional unit, but again not a common feature anywhere.

Thanks for any insight!

Don't just look at marine units. Any of them will do, they are all the same, with the except of the ones with waterproof faces on them. Go to crutchfield and pick out anything ya want, cheap, powerful and loaded with features.

If you really want to get fancy, get a DVD head unit(without a display), and connect the Video out to your TV, and you can watch DVD's on those rainy days.

Do not get a Jensen!!!! I had problems with mine last week. West Marine referred me to Recoton, the company that makes Jensen. They have completely done away with their customer service department. No one to help me. I bought a Kenwood.

The Clarion I just installed has a ton of distortion at higher ouput levels.

Thanks for the above replys, seems there are some deals to be had on ebay for cd/mp3 stereo's, seem to be around the 100 - 300 range depending what you want.

Any comments on Blaupunkt or JVC

Thanks again!

Some Blau is the best on the market, BUT, some is the worst on the market. JVC has some good models. Kenwood I think is one of the best kept secrets in the stereo industry. They make some of the best speakers, amps and stereos. Pioneer makes alot of great stuff.

West Marine has a model that is a single CD player that also can play MP3 cds. If you have a cd burner in your computer you can convert tracks from CDs and or download MP3s from the net and fit something like 6 hours or more on one CD! I used to have a CD changer made by Seaworthy. It jammed and skipped constantly. The Westmarine CD/MP3 player is rock solid and has plenty of watts to drive my Polyplaner speakers nice and loud so we can hear them over the roar of my Optimax 225.

BUT, you can get that same unit for 1/2 the price, at just about ANY other store.

Thanks West Marine!!

West Marine is truly a ripoff.

I can understand Bass Pro Shops going for more money, they have 5 times the selection of anything you can think of. West Marine offers nothing for their inflated prices.

Sea_Dad,

"The Clarion I just installed has a ton of distortion at higher ouput levels."

I could say 10 things here, but you would just laugh at me . So I'll just laugh .

I know my response is not right, but what goes around comes around .

Picked up a Jensen AM/FM/CD with 50W X 4 channels for $103 at Best Buy last week.

It cranks with 200W & 80 W poly speakers - that should keep the wife happy when she wants some background music on a sunset cruise!

I just bought and installed a Sony 50W 4 channel system at Circuit City. Sounds awesom through Bose speakers! I have never had luck with the marine units, they are ususally $$$$ and so-so performance.

The salesman told me to buy the extended warranty, use it and when it craps out in 2 years get it replaced free through the warranty. I guess I'll see how it works out.

I just sold my Wellcraft with a Jensen 50x4 watt AM/FM CD removeable faceplate. It was a good unit, except the lcd faceplate was always screwed up and not readable. Try to contact Jensen and you're gonna get frustrated. I sent them a letter in July regarding this issue (since no one would pick up the damn phone) and I got a replacement facecover the day after Christmas. Other than that is sounded clean and the power was fairly good. I am researching the JBL line for my new 28 Triton. With twin 250's on my new baby I was something LOUD and CLEAN.

Default Stereo/CD Which is the best???

I put in a Pyle MP3/CD player in my electonics box in my center console last year. The MP3 format is great, 65 songs on one CD, and if something happens to the CD, just burn another one for 50 cents. It is not marine rated, but most of the feedback I got when I asked the question is that both the marine and non-marine versions have a limited lifespan anyway. I bought my radio on ebay for around $100. The only "pure" marine version I found was the Polyplanar, it is completely sealed and has the external heat sink. The only issue I have is that is really difficult to see the readout in bright light.

Thanks for the Crutchfield site, very good for comparing/data etc. Then went to ebay and was able to get $50 cheaper.
