Default How much difference bwtn. JL 650's and Infinity Kappas?

Seen several older threads on this. I want to get some up to date opinions on these comparisons.

1. Debating on buying the jl650's or the Infinity kappa 650?
2. Debating on buying the jl400/4 or clarion axp490?

I just recieved my clarion cmd6. trying to decide what to buy to finish out this system. Just didnt know if the difference is worth the price.

What kind of boat? Depends on how much mpney you have and want to put into the boat or something else. I have the money so I did all of the 7s and mhd amps. But if it were stretching my budget clarions amps are good and have heard nothing but good about kappa speakers.

If you have a chance you should listen to both speakers. When you do bring your own music.

I had Infinity's on my previous boat, they sounded good to me. The JL sound better at higher volume levels IMHO,

Bradv, I will be asking you some questions over the next few weeks as i install my system. do you want me to ask them to you on here, or shoot you an emai or private message(if you can do that) .

I removed my old head unit, amp, and speakers today. Also filled in some screw holes.

I recieved my clarion cmd6 within the last couple days.

I am planning to order the infinitys and clarion amp tonight.

Round 1 questions.

1. what is the illumination wire(orange) for on the head unit?
2. where in my setup do you recommend fuses for protection?
3. Will I be ok with 1 battery? i was ok with my old setup. Just started the motor up every hour or two.

4. I assume using my existing power, ground wires, etc for my new amp and head unit will be ok?
5. I will be replacing speaker wire since it looks a little rough. what guage do you recommend?
6. What are the fixed audio outputs for on the back of the head unit?

You can write on here or PM either way. This way if someone else has a question they can look back at what you were wondering as well.

1. Illumination wire is typically used in cars. It basically is an automatic dimmer override. I dont bother hooking that up on the boat. If you need it dimmer at night it has a manual setting you can go in the menu and change it.
2. The Head unit should have an inline fuse for the power already as part of it. Also, the amp needs one within 18in of the battery. Depending on what amp you get will dictate what size amp/breaker you need.
3. 1 battery will work depending on how long you plan to sit. Regardless of your stereo situation i would always recommend 2 batteries on a boat.
4. Existing power for the head unit is fine but i would run new power wires for the amp. Chances are if you get that clarion or JL amp they will be pulling more power than your buss bar can handle given the wire that was probably run to it. I would use 4 gauge wire for the JL amp if thats what you get and the biggest wire that you can for the clarion as well.
5. I get 2 strand 16 gauge shielded wire for speaker wire. get it from west marine or figure out how much you need and order it too.
6. Fixed audio outputs are for if you had another area on the boat you wanted to mount a head unit but it didnt have a cd player or something. Its basically a pass through. Dont use it. it really has no use for you.

i bought the apx490 clarion amp. The amp is rated for 90 w x 4 chan at 14.4 v. i am guessing it would be around 75w at 12 v.

1.So i need to pull a new power and ground wire for my amp? 4 guage for both?
2. And what size fuse do i need to install the power wire to near the battery? any particular fuse?

I had trouble finding the infinity kappa m602. I wanted white. There were a few places on line but most people no longer carry these speakers. So, i searched hard and found the JL m650's for a good price..

I had 4 Kappa's and a Clairion amp and head in my last boat. Sounded great, big upgrade over the stock Kenwood system.

That said, I have deciede to put in JL in the new boat. 2-770's, 4-mx650's, 1-10" sub, m660 amp, Clarion cmd6 head and 490 amp. Can't wait to hear it.

More questions.

1. I left the existing tweeters on the center console. What do I hook those to? I see there is a place to hook a tweeter from on the back of the jl m650's. Is this right?

2. What are the non fader plugs used for on the back of the cmd6 head unit?
3. I have a couple of small marine box speakers I have never used. i was thinking about mounting one on the dash of the center console beside my gps. Could i hook this to the head unit instead of the amp? I will already have 4 speakers hooked to the amp and dont want to add anymore to it.

If you went with the clarion i would stick with no bigger than 10 gauge. The amp requires you to use ring terminals and if you go bigger than 10 you need the big crimpers and stuff. I would pull new power and ground if you dont have 10 gauge to the amp. and grounding directly to the battery will help eliminate noise in the boat. I would get a 50 amp maxi fuse or if you want a resettable breaker at 50 amp. The maxi fuse will be cheaper and put it within 18 inches of the battery. The tweeter output on the speakers is for the tweeter that is on the jl speaker. the speaker has a built in crossover so you cant power the tweeters on your dash unless you dont want the tweeters on your jls to not work. I would run the tweeters off the head unit that you have on the dash. They probably cant handle much more than 20 watts anyways. The nonfader plugs on the head unit are for a sub channel which means if you used that as an output to the amp whatever channel it was hooked into would not fade in or out when you adjusted it. You should have a front fade and rear fade. If you dont care about being able to fade the speakers front to back i would just run 1 set of rcas to your amp. It will convert it and send outputs to all channels. You just lose the capability of fading. I have 10 channels and 2 rcas one to each amp. Never faded or balanced in my life on a boat. But if you want the abliltiy knock yourself out. The small box speakers would be fine off the head unit i just wouldnt put them that close to your electronics in case the magnets in them cause interference with them.

the tweeters hook up sperately on the jl's. Guess i need to get some speaker wire connectors....

The jl speakers will include the small wires to connect the tweeters u just need speaker wire to the speaker. If they say 4 gauge then go with 4 gauge. The bigger the better. Just realize using a crimping tool on gauge that big is big so if u don't have it west marine typically has one u can use in store.
