Default Using an IPAQ (Personal PC) as a GPS

I have a new Compaq 3850 Personal PC and read an article about software/ hardware from Navman that enables one to use the PC as a GPS in a boat or car.

I have a chartplotter in my boat but would like to be able to have GPS capability in my vehicle.

Does anyone have any experience with such a unit? If so, how do you like it.

Thanks

Welcome aboard. PCs and marine environments don't hold up to well. Unless their made for marine use, very expensive. I would rather have a quality hand held GPS that I could use in the car or boat. www.garmin.com www.gpsdiscounts.com to buy. I have the Garmin GPSMAP 76S.

Boston Whaler, "MUMBLER", 24' Outrage, twin 175 HP Evinrude Ocean Pros. Snowball, the cat...

I had an IPAQ and the GPS unit for it. What a pain in the butt it was. Looks like a cool idea but it was nothing like a Garmin handheld unit!

Water damage is your enemy.
One splash and you lose your GPS, your calendar, phonebook, birthday list, projects, and all the important stuff stored on your handheld.
I just recently got a 12 volt adaptor plug for my Garman eTrex Legend, and I'm using that in the car. Lots easier than paper maps.
The backlight stays on all the time and the unit turns itself off automatically when you pull the power plug. Small screen though.

Sorry, I should have explained that I don't intend to use the unit in a marine enviroment. I have a chartplotter on my boat. I was thinking of using it in my truck.

Thanks
