Default Using a Street Pilot III as a backup GPS

Has anyone tried to use the Blue Chart maps in an SPIII? I would like to use mine as a backup GPS. The guy at the local West Marine store says that I will loose a lot of the detail in the maps, but it will work....he thinks.

Thanks,

Barry
