Default GPS antenna problem

I have a Garmin 178C sounder, GPS/FF combo with an exterior antenna. Two problems, the bayonet wire fitting does not stay tight on the unit without duct tape and also the wire is too long. Can I shorten the wire and install a new fitting? If so, where to buy a fitting? If not what is the solution?

External antennas are pretty cheap, if you can find one with the right connector.
You can shorten the cable if you are careful with the shield connection. But I'd buy a new antenna.
