Got the 500F installed and up and running, for the most part. Aside from a minor transducer adjustment I think all systems are go.

I think the goods outweight the bads by far and for the money it is a great unit. Just my opinion her but:

Pros: Good display, screen readable in direct sunlight as long as your polarized glasses are off.

2 Split screen size great. I find the horizontaly split to be a little nicer to use.

3 Most of the menus are straight forward and easy to manuver with either the knob or joystick.

Cons: 1 No wrap around on the menu selections. You can only go one way with the knob or joystick. Not a big deal until you get into entering waypoints and you need a large number or letter z or something. You will be wheeling for a long time.

2 No GoTo button. Makes waypoit selection a few more keystrokes than Garmin.

3 Maybe it will be a little better when I get a chip in there, but the map wouldn't scale down smaller than 8 miles. I hope that will change with the chip.

4 Also I only got to play with it for a little bit. So maybe I just haven't been able to figure it out yet. But there is now way to display nav info for the waypoint on the FF screen. It will give you a TTG and Distance but no bearing. So you can track close to the waypoint with the CDI screen and then you will need to change to the split Chart/FF screen in order to find the structure or wreck or whatever you are looking for.

Let me know if you have any other questions. I think it is just like anything new, a bit of a learning curve.

Thanks for the info. I've been playing with it on the workbench (demo mode). Looking forward to getting on the boat soon...actually, looking forward to getting ME on the boats soon!

I was thinking about buying the JRC 500F also. Keep me informed of how you guys like this unit, it seems like a nice unit for the price. I was debating on the JRC or the Garin 240 Blue and the Garmin 162. By the way does anyone know the cone angle for the JRC unit, and where is the cheapest place to buy the JRC.

Fishnut, I paid $1139.00 for the unit (with transom transducer) from Consumer's marine at the AC Boat show. That did not include the $150.00 JRC rebate; so the final cost was $989.00. I do not know the regular price.

I would call consumers again, even if they are slightly more expensive, because they are very knowledgeable and will help with technical questions over the phone. They will not rush you off.

Fishnut: If you are going to buy the JRC the rebate offer end's March 31. Check some of the online stores. I bought mine from a company in NewYork they were involved with a boat show at the time and gave boatshow price. If you need any names let me know, also there are many listed on this site.

Great low-down sean.

It would be really nice if people gave this type of Pro's & Con's on all electronics ; then we all would be learnin'.

Thanks Special K

On the way to the store to pick up a chart today.

And for the others looking out there. All sites named are good. I got mine from

www.byownergroup.com

Jim was great to work with. I didn't get quite the deal as Special K did at the boat show but he was very fair, and the support was outstanding. I also got the JRC 200F radio as a back up since it was such a good deal. The radios were back ordered, Jim waived the shipping charges for the inconvience. I will certainly be calling on them again for any future electronic needs.

Hey Sean:

How about an update. My unit arrived last week.
Hope to install it within the next few weeks.

Well I was able to get it out once last week. Still a bit of a learning curve, but all appears to be well.

I adjusted the ducer, and it works great at all speeds. I mounted the transom mount as a in hull. I loose bottom in real shallow water less than 2 1/2' but that is to be expected.

I picked up the chart for my local area and the info and detail is great. Only one thing that I think that I will call JRC on though. On most wrecks and other items that you can pull info up on the machine works great. But there are a few that I have found that if you click on the info for that object, the screen will go blank and there is no way to get out of that screen without shutting the entire unit.

So I will need to call to see if it is possibly the info on the chart and have to get it re written.

Like I said before still a learning curve. Everything seams to be pretty straight forward so I find it hard to believe that pulling up a waypoint or going to a mark on the cart is not intuitive. But I think that it is easier than I am making out to be.

I hope to get it out more this week and fine tune everything and keep learning.

Still a good unit for the $$$$ and would recomend.

Just a side note. I was at the Palm Beach boat show yesterday. The Furuno 1850WF is considerably better than last years 1850.
