Default Is DGPS going away soon?

I have the old Furno GP36, which I love, it does on excellent job of putting me on my fish and dive spots. I was reading about the new GP37, which has both DGPS and WAS. It claims a 3 meter accuracy for WAAS and 5 meter accuracy for DGPS. The interesting part is that the GP37 defaults to DGPS first and if it can't find DGPS then tries WAAS. The reason for this is that DGPS is more reliable and accurate, as the WAAS system is still under development. My question is has anybody heard anything along the lines of when they plan on stopping the broadcast of the DGPS signal? As I said early on, I'm very happy with the performance of my GP36 and DGPS and do not plan upgrading in the near future.

Thanks...
Chris

DGPS is not going anywhere.
It is the only approved correction format for IMO (international maritime organization) use. This represents aproximately 40+ countries involved in worldwide shipping.
If you do a seach on this site you'll find much more info and some good links to various regulartory agencies.

DGPS will be around for many many years... It is far too ingrained into the navigational world to be replaced. If anything ever happens, most likely it would be an enhanced DGPS transmitted, kind of like what is happening with TV and HDTV today. The same channel is Xmitted but one is far better than the other...

Later,
Chris

No DGPS isn't going anywhere any time soon and is actually being expanded nationally in the U.S.

National DGPS system

Cheers, Kerry.

I never get lost, everybody tells me where to go!
