Default NMEA question/ installation

I am installing a standard-quest vhf with DSC calling. The quest dispalys lat/lon coordinates. Is there any reason to network the radio with my nmea on the GPS?

The best reason is that if you ever need to send a distress call, the radio will send your gps coordinates, so hopefully the coast guard can find you.

The next reason would be to do position requests and send yours to friends (if your radio is equipped for that).

I was thinking the radio itself would send the lat/lon coordinates. Is this wrong?

Yep, wrong, needs to be connected to the GPS.

The radio has a built in Class D transceiver.....which will enable it to receive lat/lon DSC info from other VHF radios that are connected to a GPS.

If you want your radio to transmit your position, you need to connect it to the GPS.

Here's a link to an article that will shed some light on that subject for you if you're interested.
