It does not have to be soldered, but if it had been, chances are it would never have come apart on you in the first place. It's important that the conductor and ground shield are kept seperate, and you don't even want to think about "shoving it back together," that could cause your VHF to go kaput. Find someone who knows how to reinstall the cable into your PL-259 connector & tell them you don't care if it's soldered or not, you just want it put together properly. Watch him (or her) put it back together so you'll know how to do it next time).

Shakespeare sells an idiot-proof coupling for a few bucks that is very easy to install. West Marine sells 'em. While I have heard that soldered is best, I used this coupling when I shortend my cable and haven't noticed any degredation of performance.
