Default Need Garmin GPS Purchase Help

I have some Christmas $$$ burning a hole in my pocket. I would like to buy a Garmin handheld GPS that can be used both in the car and on a boat. I use the boat in the rivers and bays of NJ and about 2 to 3 miles off shore. Any help wold be appreciated. Thanks.

You have 2 Garmin dealers that sponsor this forum.

Yachts by Owner

And

Best Boat Care

I would hope you will try to do business with them first. They can probably answer any questions you have.

"A boat is a hole in the water, surrounded by fiberglass, into which you throw money"

Check out GPS 60c which comes out this quarter from Garmin. Details are on their web site.
For the car it has auto re-route which is a feature most other garmin hand helds do not have. It is waterproof.

For more $$ you can go IQUE 3600 which is a GPS/PDA with a large and sharp screen. But it is not waterproof.

the base road maps that come w/ garmin handhelds are lame (so are the marine ones, for that matter). magellan's much better. not sure how good garmin's premium road maps are. garmin's blue charts, however, are outstanding.

oh, get the color handheld from garmin when it comes out.

jimm,
I have a Garmin GPS 72 which has a cigarette adapter and also runs off of batteries. I'm also told that you can put software on there like from a mapsource/blue waters, however, I haven't used that yet. I love the GPS both in the boat and using it while driving and it's been very reliable and fairly inexpensive.

I purchased a 176C "package" that included the GPS, Bluechart software with 1 region, the chip to load the bluechart stuff onto, some street finder software that can also be loaded to the chip, and mounting hardware for the boat and the car.

I'm very happy with the way the bluechart stuff works. I have not tried the street finder software yet.

If you look at the reviews of the 176C you'll see some complaints about seeing the screen in bright light. I found that this was only an issue if the brightness / contrast was not adjusted correctly for the situation.

I have a Garmin 176C and find it works great for me in the SanJuan Island w/bluechart chip. Really nice to know and see what is around you if you get caught in the fog or darkness, almost as good as radar, only you can't see other boats, etc. I bought a charger and 8 nickel-metal hydride batteries for portable use and plug into boat wiring when needed.
