www.consumersmarine.com I'm sure they can tell you. I just can't remember. 10 years old?

Thanks guys. I was thinking around $200. I'm a little surprised it was $260. Troll, was that for a fairly recent model like the Satelitte 406? Or one of the 10 year old types? If one of the newer types, sounds like it wouldn't be worth paying much more than $200 for one with an expired battery, as you'd have close to $500 tied up in an older unit. The new ones are going for $500-600 if you look around a little.

Yes. It is an ACR 406 epirb bought in 97. The replacement was done by an authorized center whose number I got from ACR. The price includes disposal of old battery, installation of a new one, all new o-rings, pressure test, unit sealing, and functional test. The turnaround was very quick.

BTW: My unit was failing the self-test even though the battery was not dead. It now passes with the new battery. I was also hoping for around $200 but you can't sacrifice safety whatever the price. The unit cost around $750 when I bought it new from CME.

Anyone had the battery replaced on the Paines Wessex? I've heard that they are much cheaper to have the battery replaced. If so, that might become a factor for someone wanting to purchase an EPIRB.

I'll check into the Pains Wessex battery cost and post if I can find out. Anyone out there know?

I called ACR and their 'service center' closest to me (a West Marine store in South Carolina) advised cost is $199 if the unit checks out OK for pressure testing, etc. and all it needs is a new battery.

If the Pains Wessex battery replacement is considerably more reasonable, I'd be bery interested in finding out, as I'm in the market for an Epirb.

Question... how many of you are going with the Epirb with GPS? I'm debating that too. Obviously better to have it, but I'm not sure how much quicker they'll find you. And it's around twice the cost. Everyone seemed pretty happy when just the regular old 406 Epirb was around.

Hmmm. $199 is cheaper then I found. The ACR folks pointed me to a place in Virginia Beach. Oh well.
At least it is ready to go.

the pressure testing and Orings probably added to your total. The $199 was for battery replacement only. So you can still be happy!

JB,

I have a new Paines w/GPS. I was told 200 for the battery replacement and their place is 5 minutes from my house. They'll do it while I wait. Also, the difference between the GPS and non GPS models was less than 300 at CME (boat show price).

All I know is if I were in the CG Helo looking for someone, I would much rather have an exact lat/long for them than a "search grid", especially at night or in a low visibility situation.

JB - I think you and I were discussing which EPRIB to go with a few weeks ago. FWIW, I decided to go with the ACR GlobalFix.

When you do decide on which one you want, get a price from http://www.brokenlegdave.com. I received a coupon for a free ditch bag with the purchase. If you e-mail him, he responds very quickly.

One of the reasons that the battery is $200 for the EIPRBs is that they have to have a manufacturer warrentied 5 year Minimum shelf life, and that they have to operate the unit for 48 hours with all of the performance as though it just came off of the shelf.
This sort of engineering and quality control is not cheap.
I would not feel comfortable about going to a "Battery Warehouse" and buying parts and pieces and then having my life depend on it.

Like the old H&K ad said.

Hitch, I ended up getting the GlobalFix also, but a one year old one. So I have four years of battery life left on it, and I'm happy with the price I paid. Not a great deal, but not bad either. And can replace batteries then if need be. But they'll probably have something out that is latest/greatest by then anyway.

Let's hope we don't have to use any of them.... ever!

OK. Now that I've got the thing, is there a way I can reprogram it with my info.? Or do I need to send it to an ACR autorized facility and pay to have it done? I bought it assuming the latter, but am hoping for the former. Anyone do this themselves?

Don't know if you saw my earlier post, but when I try e-mailing you, it gets sent back.

Try this link for registration form:

http://www.sarsat.noaa.gov/epirb-form.pdf

Fill it out and fax it in - they'll update the info for that beacon.

Did you go by and see my boat? E-mail me at klyn[at]acpub.duke.edu and I'll give you my cell number (disconnected the condo phone).
