Default ICOM 402S DSC hook up.

I'm trying to hook up my new ICOM 402s DSC radio to my Magellen 6500 GPS. The 6500 has a gray nema out, and a black ground. I hook these to the RCA plug the gray to the center post, and the black to the outer case. When I plug it into the radio I do not get the GPS sign and do not get the lat/lon when I do the check.

Anyone have any ideas? I know the NEMA out works as it also feeds my chart plotter, which works.

Thanks, Bucktail

Default ICOM 402S DSC hook up.

I recently upgraded my VHF to an ICOM M502. GPS input is from my lowrance LCX-16CI.

I have noted that the GPS has to be turned on first, and have a position, before I turn on the radio. It appears that, if the positional info is not available when the radio is turned on, then it does not pick it up when it becomes available.

Seems strange, but.....

Brian, I don't turn the radio on till the GPS has a fix and sends it to the chartplotter.

B.Heaton-
Check your Magellan Manual to find out how to "enable" (turn on) the NMEA sentences that it sends out. Most units (all brands) are shipped from the factory with default settings that need to be changed when you interface them to other units. If it can't be found, or it's not too clear, call Magellan's tech support. They should be able to help you.

BIG E,
Thanks for the reply. I just came in from getting it all hooked up, and it was exactly as you said. After resetting everything I could on the GPS I finally found the correct NEMA message to supply to the DSC. Had to have GGA output from the GPS to the radio to make it work.
Thanks again for the help.

I have a Furuno 1850 DF that supplies output to my radar and to my ICOM 502. The radar picked up the GPS signal for Lat/Lon but I could not get the ICOM 502 to receive the data for the DSC function.

After reading replies on this forum, I turned on the GGA sentence on the NEMA port configuration for the 1850 to output this type of data. As soon as I did, the radio picked up the correct data. Thanks, it works great.
