Default are garmin bluechart chip/cartridges portable

If I buy a garmin bluechart cartridge that is now running on a garmin 182, will I be able to use it in my 2006? I'm not close enough to the seller to try it out first.

I seem to recall that there was something about a chip/cartridge having to be unlocked and it was only good for the unit it was unlocked for.

Sure, its just a plug it. It is the CD version, those for which you have to use your computer to load charts into the GPS, that require the unlock code. The models that use the data cartridge do not require an unlock code and you can use the cartridge in a thousand different machines if you want to.

Thom,
I e-mailed you before about wiring my new G 2006C.
Finished installing it this past weekend without a problem. On another note, when I purchased the unit I did not purchase the Bluechart for my boating area because it was dated April 2002. When will Garmin release the next updated version?
Is it based on NOAA and their scheduled updates?

Regards,
Dave

BW, I don't think there is any real planned schedule of upgrades to the charts but for whatever its worth I have seen 3 years mentioned as a likely timetable for any cartridge in general. I think I'd give Garmin's Cartography department a call if I were you to see what they have planned.

I also don't know much abou this, but I think they mention it on their website, but I believe there is an upgrade program of some sort. As I recall they will exchange a cartridge for free if it was purchased within a month of a revision and if you've owned yours for longer than that there is some preset credit they will give you for your old chart when you exchange it for a new one (plus lots of your cash of course). Please remember that this is just stuff lurking in the dusty gray parts of my memory - and there is plenty of stuff luring in there that never really happened, and I am not the one to tell you which is which .......

Updates of Garmin charts is a long time comming. If you have a chip that is April 2002, that will not be updated for at least three years. Remember that the charts come from NOAA database, based on surveys often 50 years old. Weekly updates are available on line from your Local Notice to Mariners--and should be reviewed for safe navigation. The Garmin units allow hazards or obstructions to be marked on the base unit.

I just received an e-mail from Garmin and the next release will be March of 2003. I don't know if that release will be different that the April 2002. I'll wait til spring to get things ironed out.
