Default GPS for CAR and MARINE use???

I am on the market to buy a new GPS unit, I was hoping there would be some sort of portable unit that I could use in my truck and my boat, Obviously killing 2 birds with 1 stone would be nicer on my wallet as well.

Has anyone seen such a unit?

I had a Garmin 276 that worked great until someone decided they needed it worse than I did.
It had the street maps on a CD that you had to load on the Garmin chip. I bought a preloaded chip for Puget Sound and another with western lakes.
The Garmin 478 I replaced it with has all the USA street maps and offshore maps installed in an internal hard drive.
I found it on line for $550.00 I think I paid 800+ for the original 276 when it came out.
They have a new 2 new versions with a larger touch screens that run $1000+
You pays you're money and takes your choice.

I have a Garmin 478 coastal maps, City Navigator road maps, XM radio and XM weather. The newer unit is the GPS 640 bigger screen. But you only get weather in the marine mode.

I have the 478 and love it. I use it as a back up GPS and weather on the boat and as a navigator in the car. The 478 gets weather in Auto mode, if I remember correctly from my FL trip two years ago. It helped us avoid the Tropical storm that was there the whole week.

Most garmin handheld can handle both duty efficently.

Whatever unit you get. (1) Make sure it has plenty of storage memory for map uploads. (2) for moderate to heavy car use - make sure it is touchscreen for easy address entering.

It is cheaper and better to get a Nuvi (car unit) and a GPSmap (marine unit). If you insist on getting a single unit for both. If you are more street - get a garmin oregon then upload both maps. As for salty fingers and touchscreen. That have yet to be proven. If you are more marine - get a gpsmap then upload both maps. When you are on the street - it just take a little more effort to enter the addresses.
